Flat surfaces versus curved surfaces ¶
Flat or nearly flat surfaces, such as the oval side plate or the 10x10cm decorative tile, are the easiest to work on if your design has fine detail or a geometric pattern. The brush behaves predictably on a flat surface. Curved surfaces, such as the yunomi teacup or the tall-necked bud vase, require you to rotate the piece as you paint, which changes the way lines sit. Neither is harder in absolute terms, but they reward different kinds of design.
Scale and design density ¶
A common mistake is choosing a small form for a dense, detailed design. The tanuki figure, for example, is about 9cm tall. You can paint it beautifully with a simple two-colour scheme and a few liner details, but if you try to reproduce a complex botanical pattern across its surface you will struggle. A larger form like the oval plate gives you room to be detailed. If your design is ambitious, start with a larger surface.
What the form will be used for ¶
Functional pieces, such as cups and plates, are fired with a food-safe clear glaze over the underglaze, which affects the surface texture and the way colours read after firing. Decorative pieces, such as tile panels and figures, can be finished with a matte glaze that reads closer to the raw underglaze colour. When you book, note in the reservation whether your piece is intended to be functional, and we will advise on the glaze options at the start of your session.
Making a gift: a few specific suggestions ¶
If you are painting a piece as a gift, the oval side plate and the yunomi are the most versatile. Both are useful objects that fit most households. The tile panel commission is a good choice for a housewarming gift because it is clearly decorative and can be adapted to the recipient's interior.
