Group pottery painting sessions have become a common choice for company team events and birthday gatherings in Tokyo over the last few years. They work well because the activity is genuinely engaging without requiring any physical skill, and the pace can be adjusted to suit different levels of interest. A few practical points are worth knowing before you book.

How many people fit comfortably

Willow Panel Gate seats twelve at full capacity. We have found that groups of eight to ten tend to produce the best experience: enough people to generate a lively atmosphere, few enough that each person can get attention from the studio assistant assigned to the group. For groups larger than twelve, we can discuss a split session where two smaller groups come in at different times.

What happens when you arrive

Group sessions begin with a 15-minute introduction from Haruki Shimizu, who runs the group programme. He covers the basics of underglaze painting, shows how the liner tools work, and runs through the palette. This is not a lecture; it takes about 15 minutes and is designed to get everyone started confidently rather than spending the first 30 minutes of the session asking questions.

Choosing forms for a group

For group bookings we recommend allowing each person to choose their own bisqueware form from the current range rather than pre-selecting a single form for everyone. The range is wide enough that there is usually something for each person. If you want a cohesive set, such as a matching plate set for an office or a coordinated tile series, let us know when you book and we will advise on which forms work well together.

Lead time and logistics

Group bookings require a minimum of one week's notice. Two weeks is more comfortable, especially for weekend dates. A deposit of 50 percent is taken at the time of booking. Finished pieces are ready approximately one week after the session and can be collected individually, collected by one person for the group, or shipped separately via Yamato Transport at 880 yen per parcel.

Group bookings are managed directly by Haruki Shimizu. The best way to start is to email hello@willowpanelgate.com with your preferred date, group size, and any particular requirements. We will confirm availability and send a booking form within one business day.
